Rolls-Royce to build four new factories for £300m
28.07.09
Rolls-Royce boosted British manufacturing today when it unveiled plans to build four new factories in the UK.
The aircraft engine maker is splashing out more than £300 million on the factories — with the Government chipping in £45 million — in a move which will create or secure about 800 jobs. Three of the factories will focus on the aerospace sector, while the other will develop technology for the nuclear power industry.
Rolls-Royce is also investing in two research programmes to cut the carbon dioxide emissions of its future aircraft engines. Chief executive Sir John Rose said: “These investments reflect our commitment to continue to invest in the future of our business.”
The plans are being supported by the Government, as part of a £150 million package of measures to protect British industry from the recession during the next two years.
Business Secretary Peter Mandelson said: “This practical package of measures will help equip British manufacturers to take advantage of the advanced technologies and new market opportunities shaping out industrial future.”

Rolls Royce is one of the few manufacturing companies left in England and a shineing example of British inginuity at its best. What a shame that nothing was done to save our telecommunications industry ie Marconi. All these apprenticeships that the Goverment trumpets will be of little use if do not have enough large Heavy Engineering to utilise graduates, engineering and trade apprentices
