Murdoch: I will charge for online content

06.08.09

Rupert Murdoch, head of the News Corp global media empire, plans to charge for all the online content of his newspapers and television channels in a dramatic shake-up of the industry.

“We intend to charge for all our news websites,” he said. “If we're successful, we'll be followed by all media.”

Murdoch, whose media empire includes The Times, The Wall Street Journal and Sky, warned that “the big competition will be coming from the BBC” which offfers free online news.

“Our policy is to win,” he said.

It came as New Corp reported a fourth quarter loss of $203 million and a $3.4 billion loss for the full year.

We'll see how long this lasts. Since murdoch doesn't have a monopoly on the news - thank God, the sooner he realises that we can do without his news organisations the better.
