Canadian move for stake buoys AIB

Allied Irish Banks' shares jumped today as it emerged that Royal Bank of Canada has made an approach to buy a stake.

The talks were said to be at “very, very early stages”. The Irish bank, which has several branches and a commercial business in London, is 25%-owned by the Irish taxpayer after a 33.5 billion (£28.8 billion) government bailout.
