OFT holds back news referral

24.09.09

The Office of Fair Trading today said it would not be referring the massively consolidating newspaper and magazines distribution industry to the Competition Commission despite suspicions of potential monopolistic behaviour.

In the past year or more, big publishers have progressively been ditching Dawson News, with the result that Dawson has exited the sector, leaving the major wholesaling market to Menzies and Smiths News.

However, with a host of new guidelines having been laid down since last October, the OFT said it would give the industry two years to settle down before deciding on whether to refer it to the Competition Commission.
