Sales surge lifts shops’ Christmas hopes

Retailers in London are hoping Christmas will not be as bad as feared after a dramatic surge in sales.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) today said that same-store sales in the capital were 7.5% higher last month than in September last year when the banking crisis hit confidence in the High Street.

Sales on Bond Street, Oxford Street and Regent Street rose 25% between August and September.

Mild weather and returning confidence encouraged Londoners to splash out, while the weak pound has boosted demand among foreign tourists.

BRC director general Stephen Robertson said: “The results offer retailers a glimpse of optimism in the run-up to Christmas.”
