Pressure: Guy Hands’ private-equity empire is accused of trying to get Novera cheaply through its green energy arm

Novera attacks wind farms record of its raider Infinis

26 Oct 2009

Green energy minnow Novera continued its campaign to fight off corporate raider Guy Hands today saying he, unlike Novera, has no record in delivering any wind farm projects.

Infinis, the green energy arm of Hands' private-equity empire Terra Firma has caused a huge row in the City, where several blue-chip investors like Aviva, 3i and Caledonia say Hands is trying to capture Novera on the cheap.

In its defence document posted today, Novera says Infinis claims to be focused on growing a strong pipeline of wind opportunities. “But,” says Novera, “unlike Novera it has yet to complete its first wind farm.”

The defence document also revealed Novera made gross profits of £3.2 million from wind farm electricity output in the first nine months of the year, against £2.1 million for the whole of 2008.

Novera said its operations have moved on significantly from last year when Infinis first made an offer, priced at 90p a share. Last month Infinis launched an offer for Novera at just 62½p, valuing the group at £90 million, having pushed up its stake in Novera to 42%.

The latest raid has seen City investors speaking for 32% of Novera officially objecting to Infinis's bid on price and on tactics.
