BarCap steps up its challenge to Goldman with shake-up

Barclays Capital today named City rainmaker Tom King as co-head of corporate finance in a major boost to its London operations.

King, who left Citigroup in September, will work in London alongside New York-based Ros Stephenson, with both reporting to head of global investment banking Hugh "Skip" McGee.

BarCap also announced the appointment of Joseph Gatto, previously co-head of corporate finance with Stephenson in New York, as chairman of investment banking for the Americas.

The shake-up underlined the ambitions of BarCap president Bob Diamond to build up its investment banking business to rival Goldman Sachs.

He has already recruited 140 bankers and traders to the investment bank since last year.

US-born King was most recently Citigroup's head of banking for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
