TM Lewin puts its shirt on beating slump

5 Nov 2009

Shirtmaker TM Lewin today pledged to continue its London expansion as it proved it is defying the recession.

The Jermyn Street-based group, which already has 35 stores within the M25, is opening a new branch in Regent Street before Christmas and another in Euston station in the coming months.

Chief executive Geoff Quinn said: “Our stores in the capital have outperformed the rest and we are particularly pleased with Canary Wharf. We believe there are plenty more opportunities in London.” Quinn also predicted a happy Christmas for the retailer: “We are cautiously optimistic about Christmas.”

Underlying profits in the year to the end of February rose 16% to £12.7 million, aided by new store openings. Sales in the six months since then jumped 11%.

Their shirts are fine although sizing varies hugely - I have one with sleeves a full inch longer than others in exactly the same range and size.

However, the pricing is embarrassing. Sure, these are £80 shirts..

And they must be the only shirt retailer in the UK who won't press a newly purchased shirt for a client. Even Next do that!

They are a good value volume retailer. I use them frequently and see many others do too.
They make Charles Tyrwitt look dowdy.
