American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld

For one thing, she's a pretty, goody-goody girl from a solid, middle-class background who, like Laura Bush, inadvertently causes the death of her classmate in a road accident. For another thing, she marries a hearty, boozy, rich guy who goes on to become President.

Sounds cheap but it's actually superbly well-written — one of the most absorbing books of the year.
