Varadero would give a luxurious base from which to drive and appreciate central Cuba;-
(1) The country, market towns and agriculture;
(2) Havanna City with river and seafront; The historical and modern sections of the Museo Nacional-Arte Cubano; and the 'Museo de la Revolucion' and
(3) To meet the locals & understand why they say " most people regard the revolution as having been a good thing".
Tourists(as well as their foreign currency) are welcomed - and real Cuba can definitely found within a few hours drive of Varadero.
We still only speak limited spanish, but that would not be an obstacle to enjoying this holiday.

My partner and I of 17 years were, this summer, looking to go to Cuba with our son over Christmas perhaps, to get married. Nowhie's lost his job so all we managed was 4 days camping in Southwold! Cuba would be devine and such an experience for our son! (and he wants to see where James Bond went to!)

I would to take my son or friend to Cuba one for some quality family time and two for my friend and I to visit all the back streets and see how the real cubans live.
And maybe meet Fidel Castro and he can tell us about his wonderful relationship with Che Gavara. And how he has outlived all the American Presidents

Fidel Castro, Buena Vista Social Club, Montecristo cigars, Criollo and 1950's american classic cars set on a beautiful caribbean island with ecletic crumbling architecture and people with a diverse and rich political, social and cultural background. Where else on earth would I rather be? I can think of nowhere else... So let it be me!!!

I've never previously been tempted to comment on a competition that I hope to win, but am paradoxically doing so now just to say that I couldn't have expressed myself better than Kate (c11 places below this?). I stupidly delayed visiting the USSR until it was too late, ditto Albania, though was glad to have experienced the drabness of the so-called German Democratic Republic and the un-overrun-with-tourists, pre-McDonaldsised pre-Velvet Revolution Czechoslovakia. Yet Cuba has always been something different, geographically nestling as it does in the armpit of its big bully neighbour... (Kate, if you win and I don't, can I come? If vice versa, yes you can!)

The Cuban revolution, Castro and Guevara have given us one of the most fascinating and enduring stories in 20th century political history and the way the country has continued to exist as an independent communist state resisting pressures from the outside world is a remarkable testament to them.It would be a fantastic privilege to experience such a country first hand.

I have always wanted to visit Cuba: it's important to do so while Castro lives. I'm longing to see the beautiful old-style but decaying colonial architecture,and 1940s American cars. A big attraction is the friendly people and superb music and dancing.I'm especially keen on dancing and know this is a Cuban speciality.Most of all, I want to make people in my Spanish class jealous!

Well the Cubans have music, they have soul and don't believe what you read in the the travel guides, they have great food. If you want colour Cuba is the place to be. It is a nation of survivors and we could learn a lot from them!

Listening to Cuban music in La Habana, dancing la salsa & samba every night in the streets with Cuban men, drinking a Mojito or Pina Colada and smoking a Montecristo on the paradisiac white sand beaches in Varadero, taking pictures of the classic automobiles labouring along streets and country roads has been my best holiday so far. I want to go back there please make me a winner !

Cuba has to be the most exciting island to visit in the Caribbean. It seems to be such a melting pot of cultures and has managed to keep it's own unique identity. It's got to be down to the character of the Cubans that they are so proud of their country and have some of the best exports ever - salsa and Havanna Club to name but two!
