Dexter by Design by Jeff Lindsay

It comes as something of a shock to find the unfeeling Dexter Morgan, the friendly neighbourhood psychopath, on honeymoon in Paris at the start of his fourth — perfectly justifiable — rampage. He and his wife Rita visit a gruesome exhibition that brings a whole new meaning to cut-up art — one that is right up the blood spatter expert's mean street. Back home in Miami, some sicko is carving out the insides of corpses and filling them with fruit or Boy Scout paraphernalia and when Deborah, Dexter's cop sister, ends up knifed while investigating the case, Demented Dexter goes after the perp with a chainsaw: a big mistake that soon sees the publicity-shy forensic scientist slicing and dicing on YouTube.

Rita's children, meanwhile, abused by their jailed junkie father, are turning into "little predators", keen to learn their stepfather's special skills — which prove useful when the dead perp's lover comes after Dexter. The result is a clever, sardonic, constantly surprising novel that reveals Dexter — who fears he may be developing emotions — to be much better company that Hannibal Lecter. The incredibly gory climax is both horrifying and hilarious — a very difficult trick to pull off. If only all thrillers could be this good..

Synopsis by Foyles.co.uk

Dexter Morgan is back. After his surprisingly glorious honeymoon in Paris, life is almost normal for Dexter Morgan. Married life seems to agree with him: he's devoted to his bride, his stomach is full, and his homicidal hobbies seem nicely under control. But old habits die hard-and Dexter's work as a blood spatter analyst never fails to offer new temptations that appeal to his offbeat sense of justice...and his Dark Passenger still waits to hunt with him in the moonlight. Luckily for Dex, there's someone out there with particularly twisted tastes. Dexter may have never been a big fan of art - but the discovery of a corpse (artfully displayed as a sunbather relaxing on a beach chair) naturally piques his curiosity. Miami's finest soon realize they've got a terrifying new serial killer on the loose. And Dexter, of course, is back in business. From the most original voice in crime fiction, DEXTER BY DESIGN is an enthralling, macabre and gruesomely entertaining thriller.
