London's 1000 most influential people 2011: Environment

Tamsin Omond
Campaigner
First came to prominence as one of a group of demonstrators against Heathrow expansion who scaled the roof of Parliament. Now a leading figure in activist group Climate Rush, provoking the ire of owners of the 4x4 vehicles that her protesters target. Baronet's granddaughter says: "I am filled with social anxiety when I have to sashay among the posh."

Kulveer Ranger
Director of Environment and Digital London
He won plaudits for his handling of the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme, which has done wonders for cycling in the capital. Still seen as one of the Mayor's key aides, despite losing his transport brief to Isabel Dedring in a job swap. He got her lower-profile environment job in City Hall, with an added digital brief.

John Stewart
Hacan Clearskies, campaigner
London's longest-serving veteran of the battle against Heathrow savoured a major victory with the Coalition's cancellation of expansion plans last year. Banned from entering the US in September, he is now focusing on ending night flights before 6am and on winning daytime respite for those living beneath flight paths.

Caroline Lucas
Green Party, leader
Mild-mannered but sharp-thinking, Britain's first Green MP has blasted Tory reforms of planning laws and urged disaffected Lib-Dems to "join us". Elected to Brighton Pavilion last year, she is the only MP to boast on her website that she has been arrested - she was charged with breaching the peace at an anti-nuclear sit-in. Has just put solar panels on her family home.

The Prince of Wales
Heir to the throne
The Prince's dedication to green-tinged causes is regularly controversial - homeopathy, talking to plants - but always passionate. His Prince's House at this year's Ideal Home Exhibition featured hemp insulation and recycled furniture while his Foundation for the Built Environment makes waves in the property world - to the dismay of some developers.

John Sauven
Greenpeace, executive director
A campaigner with Greenpeace for 20 years and its head since 2007, this north Londoner's recent efforts have been focused on fighting climate change and reining in the oil companies in the wake of last year's BP Gulf of Mexico spill. Likes to sail in his spare time.

Zac Goldsmith
Conservative MP
The Richmond MP and son of the late billionaire Sir James Goldsmith was a key adviser to David Cameron on the environment before the election. Still a committed Green, he has slammed Tory reforms of planning laws, fearing it could damage the countryside. But it's the dashing Goldsmith's eventful private life that gets the society columns excited.

Colin Matthews
British Airports Authority, CEO
Assailed by the eco-lobby, yet Matthews has made a persuasive case that airports can reduce pollution. Has warned Britain faces becoming "an island cut-off" without a third runway at Heathrow. Has past background in energy industry.

Franny Armstrong
Campaigner
Best known for her documentary McLibel and 2008's climate change film Age of Stupid, the film-maker also founded the 10:10 campaign to reduce carbon emissions by 10 per cent last year and it's still going strong - even inspiring US anti-banking protesters on Wall Street.

Tom Delay
Carbon Trust, CEO
Leads the not-for-profit company that provides support for companies trying to cut their carbon emissions. Recent sign-ups to its certification schemes and the like include GlaxoSmithKline, LG and Taylor Wimpey. Has just wooed ex-Shell boss James Smith to be chairman.

James Cameron,
Climate Change Capital, Vice Chairman
A former lawyer, he worked on the Kyoto Protocol and other climate change issues prior to joining this low-carbon oriented investment manager and advisory group. Also on Oxfam's development board. CCC has been making a string of investments in eco-start-ups.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall
Chef and eco-campaigner
Long an advocate of organics and foraging, the TV chef has in the past year mounted a high-profile campaign against the unsustainable practices of the fishing industry. Has urged restaurants to offer "doggy bags" to diners to end "criminal waste" of leftover food.

Jeremy Leggett
Solarcentury, executive chairman
This former oil-industry geologist's journey took him through years as a Greenpeace campaigner to founding Solar Century, the UK's leading solar energy company and maker of photo-voltaic roof tiles. Has lobbied hard to preserve tax incentives for renewable energy.

Nicko Williamson
Climatecars, CEO
Well-bred eco-entrepreneur has established the company as one of London's leading green taxi firms since setting it up, aged just 22, in 2007. Now runs a fleet of 70 Toyota Prius hybrids.

Jenny Bates
Campaigner
A veteran campaigner as Friends of the Earth's London co-ordinator, she has been prominent recently in campaigning against air pollution, claiming traffic causes 29,000 premature deaths a year in the capital. Also opposes the Mayor's plans for a Thames estuary airport.

Alex Michaelis
Architect
The sought-after west London architect, one half of the Michaelis Boyd partnership, is a leading proponent of green building. He built his own green home underground, as well as designing the refurbishment of David Cameron's famously planet-friendly North Kensington house.

Mark Constantine
Lush cosmetics, founder
The founder of Britain's last independent maker of eco-friendly cosmetics is a long-time supporter of various radical causes. Lush has given support to activists campaigning against roads, incinerators and airports - as well as banning animal testing for its own products.

Chris Dow
Closed Loop Recycling, Managing Director
The MD of this innovative plastics recycling company was chosen by Boris Johnson as one of the Mayor's 12 international creativity champions for London. The firm's Dagenham plant recycles 35,000 tonnes of plastic bottles a year.

Julia Stafford
Wine merchant
Bubbly oenophile developed her passion for the environment working in the oil and gas industry. Her new venture practises sustainability and low-food-miles - by championing English wine, through the capital's first all-English wine bar, the Wine Pantry, in Borough Market.

Marney Hall
Garden designer
This designer and conservationist has a long track record of wildlife-friendly gardens. This year's Chelsea Flower Show saw her win the Silver Flora award for her Skyshades eco-garden, a "log cabin for the modern era". She has previously won best in show at Chelsea, Hampton Court and BBC Gardeners World Live (twice).

Sir Jonathon Porritt
Writer
The former Friends of the Earth director and chair of the last government's Sustainable Development Commission now devotes his time to writing and advising large companies on sustainability strategy. The son of a baronet, he has declined to claim the family title.
