Nemesis by Jo Nesbo

A man is holding up banks in Oslo and shooting the cashier if it takes longer than 25 seconds to empty the ATMs. Harry Hole, "the alcoholic, obstreperous, stubborn bastard", is one of the detectives assigned to the case. His girlfriend is away in Moscow fighting for custody of her son, so Harry sees nothing wrong in having dinner with an old flame, a wannabe artist. The next thing he knows is she's dead and the killer — who likes sending teasing emails — is taking great delight in framing him for the murder. Meanwhile, the cop responsible for killing his female colleague in The Redbreast is starting to get the feeling that Harry knows whodunit & Nemesis, which takes its title from the piece the dead woman was working on, is a superb novel, even better than its two predecessors. Its intricate, truly gripping plot turns out to have an elegant simplicity which proves that "Losing your life is not the worst thing that can happen. The worst thing is to lose your reason for living." The seemingly untouchable cop-killer is such a brilliant, evil creation that he makes you punch the sofa in frustration. There is now no shortage of Scandinavian crime writers available in translation but Nesbo is in a class of his own. Bravo! — as they say in Norway.

Synopsis by Foyles.co.uk

Grainy CCTV footage shows a man walking into a bank and putting a gun to a cashier's head. He tells her to count to twenty-five. When he doesn't get his money in time, she is executed. Detective Harry Hole is assigned to the case. While Harry's girlfriend is away in Russia, an old flame gets in touch. He goes to dinner at her house and wakes up at home with no memory of the past twelve hours. The same morning the girl is found shot dead in her bed. Then Harry begins to receive threatening e-mails. Is someone trying to frame him for this unexplained death? Meanwhile the bank robberies continue with unparalleled savagery. Gripping and surprising, Nemesis is the new thriller by one of the biggest stars of Scandinavian crime fiction.
