The new London Evening Standard

Today is a new beginning for the London Evening Standard.

We have a radical new look which is fresh, modern and forward-looking, for a newspaper which will be fair, independent and will celebrate the capital.

You will see that we have put London into our front page masthead — exactly where it belongs.

It emphasises that we want to reach everyone who lives and works in the world's greatest and most vibrant city.

We are bringing new writers and new sections to the paper.

Today you will find a dazzling and witty insight into the end of the age of excess by the great American writer Tom Wolfe.

The talented and funny Sam Leith makes his debut as our new Monday columnist.

We are also introducing a new section every day,
starting with Trends, which will record the latest ideas, crazes, conversations and phrases. It will be vital reading in a city which is always ahead of the curve.

There will be more surprises as the week goes on with daring new columnists including Chris Addison, the comedian star of In The Loop.

And every day we will bring you exclusive stories and breaking news which will set the agenda for London. Our website, www.standard.co.uk, is also changing with a new look making it easy to find the latest updates and the best analysis of our city anywhere on the internet, the first in a series of developments.

We are also launching a new mobile service at
www.istandard.co.uk. It will allow access for people on the move to breaking news, travel updates, weather forecasts, stock market developments and the freshest sports coverage.

We would like to thank all our readers for their loyalty and welcome new ones.

A new life together begins today.
