Sian Berry: promising free insulation for all London homes

Green contender promises free insulation for all London homes

Katharine Barney, Evening Standard
28.03.08

Green candidate Sian Berry has promised to provide free insulation for all homes should she be elected mayor on 1 May.

The plans aim to cut carbon emissions from London homes.

She said the scheme was based on one tried by the Green Party in Kirklees.

But the plans could also become a reality should Ken Livingstone be re-elected as he has promised Ms Berry a job if he wins.

Addressing the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, Ms Berry said: "Half London's emissions come from poorly insulated homes. We will insulate one street at a time rather than one home at a time and that will hugely speed up the process."

The GREEN PARTY promises to cut carbon emission in London. I wonder if they are really aware of the degree of interest that London home owners have in reducing their carbon foot prints.

A firm known to me recently carried out a 10.000 mail shot of residents living in Richmond and Twickenham offering them Solar Panel installations which could save them hundreds of pounds on their gas bills for hot water provision. They achieved a total response from 5 homes only.

How therefore can the GREEN PARTY and the LIBS claim that London govt is interested in what they have to offer voters

And who will be funding this? The London taxpayer of course, hurrah for us, my house already has loft and cavity wall insulation so presumably I will be exempt from paying for this? No? There's a shock.
