MAN IN THE NEWS

Matt O'Connor

THE English Democrat candidate launched his campaign for Mayor sitting in a bath of blood and rose petals outside City Hall to symbolise the young lives lost to violent crime in the capital. His supporters distributed handwash to passers-by as they accused Ken Livingstone of "washing his hands" of youth violence. Mr O'Connor, who previously headed campaign group Fathers 4 Justice, said: "Our children deserve better than the meaningless political soundbites being delivered by the other candidates. We don't need more school visits, body armour, community projects or male role models. These kids need their dads."

CAMPAIGN CAPERS

WHEN Ken Livingstone turned up yesterday at a Labour event in Merton he was ably assisted by local MP Siobhan McDonagh. The thoroughly New Labour Ms McDonagh had the grace to admit that she and the Mayor had "not always seen eye to eye". But it was even more ironic that her sister Margaret was also on hand. Margaret was the Labour general secretary under Tony Blair who expelled Ken from the party. Fortunately, there were no hard feelings.
