Johnson wants crime map for every street

A New York-style scheme to allow Londoners to monitor crime in their street could be launched on the internet, mayoral candidate Boris Johnson pledged today.
Mr Johnson said people would be able to use the "crime mapping" system like Google Earth to hold police to account.
If elected, he said he would launch a scheme similar to one operated by the New York Police Department, which allows people to visit a website to see how many robberies or burglaries are committed on their street. The Met already compiles the statistics but only releases borough-wide figures.
Mr Johnson today unveiled new details of his crime manifesto - and gave a lukewarm endorsement to Met Commissioner Sir Ian Blair. Only months after saying Sir Ian should resign over the Stockwell shooting, he admitted: "I am going to have to have confidence in his leadership of the Met because I cannot remove him."
The Tory also revealed he wanted to raise millions from the City and the private sector for a Mayor's Fund to support groups involved in youth initiatives to fight London's gang culture.
