Tories ambush the Mayor and the Greens
Katharine Barney, Evening Standard25.04.08
Boris Johnson's supporters today ambushed a Ken Livingstone walkabout in Borough Market.
The event was supposed to give Mr Livingstone a chance to meet stallholders as well as encourage shoppers to use their first vote for him and their second for Green Party candidate Si‚n Berry.
But no sooner had Mr Livingstone and Ms Berry arrived, accompanied by TV presenter June Sarpong, than the first Tory supporter turned up heckling him and waving a "Back Boris" placard.
Adozen more Tories in T-shirts then tried to obscure Green Party and Ken Livingstone posters with images of Mr Johnson.
Green Party Assembly member Jenny Jones tried to intervene but was pushed out of the way. Several Green Party members tried to block the Tory supporters and amid shoving, Mr Livingstone's walkabout was cut short.
He today said if he was re-elected Ms Berry would be given a job looking at not only the environment but also ways to improve life for small businesses.
They had handed out leaflets stressing their green credentials and discrediting those of their opponents Mr Johnson and Brian Paddick.
The flyers were emblazoned with six green policies:
• Support for the Kyoto Treaty.
• £25 congestion charge for gasguzzlers.
• Rolling out the Low Emission Zone to cut pollution from lorries.
• Opposing airport expansion.
• Half of new homes to be affordable.
• Maintaining the current congestion charge zone.
They then attacked their opponents claiming Mr Johnson is opposed to all of them while Mr Paddick would only implement two of them.

That's the best thing the Tories can come up with for campaigning tactics?
Sheesh. Grow up!

It does the Green Party no good at all, morally or even tactically, to cling so closely to any other candidate: it shows lack of confidence in the appeal of their own message, and a desperation for power at any price. To cling to Ken in particular is suicidal: many people who would never normally dream of voting Conservative are going to on Thursday, purely to try and clean up politics. Livingstone's clique treat any money entrusted to them as their own, and tell any lie that comes to mind. The Green Party has for several years attracted idealistic people who would once have looked to the Labour Party as a home for their idealism. I suppose you could call Ms Berry's tactical positioning a sign of the Greens becoming a grown-up, mainstream party: however, I think it will taint them badly in the event.

I just think vote none of the above. It's all just coffers for the greedy ex-trotskyite or neo fascist politicos and their corporate /business community mates. Meanwhile the rest of us are trapped in poverty and things are getting worse. I assume there is going to be another wholesale clearing of the East End like has happened several times before.

"Half of new homes to be affordable" - that's just a meaningless sound bite. All homes are affordable for some people. Do Ken and the Green woman really think that builders are going to sell homes at a loss, or is there yet another tax ruse up their collective sleeves?

"... I wouldn't vote for myself" - Ken Livingstone (slightly abridged ![]()
Well at least we can agree on something.

Big mistake by the supporters of Boris Johnson. Surely they should know this is not going to change any minds or win over those undecided; they just looked like drunken kids 'out for a laugh' - crack down on their kind! No doubt they found it greatly amusing and a good story to tell their friends but they really didn't help Boris.

This childish game seems to be about Boris's top intellectual level - you wouldn't want him to stretch that brain cell.
- Louise, North London
It's thuggish for the Tories to start pushing around Jenny Jones at a walkabout. I hope Boris will condemn the physical intimidation and that we don't see more of it in the final week.

Bravo Boris and team! Ken is an absolute disgrace and the sooner he goes the better! Boris has got my vote; a real candidate with real ideas for change.
- Sam, Pimlico
That's typical of the Boris campaign, no real policies just aggressive opportunism. Boris wouldn't stand a chance if Labour weren't doing so poorly in the polls. Ken and Sian have got my votes - I just hope everyone realises there's nothing but hot air coming from the Tory camp.

I love the Standard but it's coverage of Ken has been biased and one sided. Boris is a clown. Ken was right about the tube he is accessible. Boris is a wanna be elitists with nothing to be elite about.

Wow, I think that's the first time the Tories have bothered to ambush a Green photo op' - we must be ruffling some feathers with our second preference recommendation. Pathetic. Any substance from Boris yet on how he would reduce London's carbon emissions by 60% by 2025?
- Sue, Lewisham, London
If Boris was actually be more than a puppet mayor I'd vote for him. But I can't see him being the leader this city needs - all I can see is Cameron putting a team of Tories around him; and the way the Mayoralty is set up - that's not going to work. Can we start thinking now for whose next in 2012 - sorry Boris - you're not many.
- Sara, london, se1
Go team Boris.....how can we take anything that Ken says seriously? He said he wouldn't run for a third team and did, he's already planning on rising tube prices, he's a shameless crook who has admitted to us already that he would 'do anything for a vote'. London needs a positive change and that change is Boris Johnson!
- Ashley, East London
Borough market not the place to praise the congestion charge given what it costs the stall holders many of whom are low waged.
- Thalia, london UK
If Sian Berry supports Livingstone she's obviously a crook like him.
Boris is all blather and spin - forget him.
Vote "Other"
- Tedworth, Essex
We all know what Ken and the Greens stand for, just double the figure.
- Howard, London
Ms Berry to improve life for small businesses. Thanks Ken, that's the best laugh I have had in years.
- Anne, London
Boris Johnson will prove to be a tremendous asset for London. Livingstone is ruined this City in so many respects. Any person that drinks Scotch Whisky at 10.00 in the morning is not capable of running a wonderful town like London!
- Maggi Nixon, London, UK
Ken & Sian obviously haven't read yesterday's report that shows under 1% reduction in emissions will be achieved by doubling VED taxes on vehicles.
If she had any Green principles, she'd have loudly denounced Ken's waste of money in regularly letting off hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of fireworks.
Perhaps their real agenda is more tax misery on Londoners - it just makes me more likely to vote for Boris.
