Bookies pay out on Boris victory

Bookies began paying out on a Boris Johnson victory this afternoon.

Hours before the official announcement, bookmakers Paddy Power declared they believed the Tory had won the contest for London Mayor.

The £100,000 payout, which could backfire if Ken Livingstone wins, caught the mood of change in the capital after Labour suffered its worst town hall election results for 40 years.

It crashed to third place with only 24 per cent of the vote. The Prime Minister also appeared to think a Johnson victory was on the cards. He said he had called Mr Livingstone to thank him for all he had done for the capital.

"I congratulated him on what he had done to secure the Olympics for London, what he had done for transport, what he had done to improve policing."

Eton buffoon? Are you still at 'we don't need no education'? Boris is intelligent that's why he is the mayor and not Ken.

- Anne Hayward, Newcastle, UK

A win for Boris will be a win for London and Londoners and all who visit our world city.

Its so important that whoever will be Mayor sees the importance of replacing the ineffective and damaging central zone and western extension zone Congestion Charge/road pricing by sensible congestion management.

Better and cheaper public transport and more underground travel facility, that will encourage people out of their private vehicles, the reversing of the anti-car policy, and cheaper and more plentiful parking in and out of town, and at new public transport hubs for widespread park and ride.
These steps will reverse the damage caused in the last 4 years by the charge, and allow London to begin to flourish again; replacing further unemployment, and downsizing and shoppers keeping away from town.

The limited income that the CC scheme brought to the Mayor's budget that wasn't spent on administering the scheme, (that would be even lower but for the disgraceful level of fines and limited ways of being allowed to pay charges and fines) can be easily replaced by keeping more of the business rates raised in London in London.

Let all in local and central government and parliament begin to realise that enabling and facilitating interaction between suppliers of goods and services and those who use them is the way to help a city flourish. Instead of all the extra dreamt up taxes, masquerading as virtuosity, putting the city into decline and reducing choice in London.

If. If Boris has won, it's a good thing for Boris but not necessarily for London. Now we in the metropolis have to endure his jokes, flippancy and attempts to learn what Livingstone already knew.

For the city's sake I pray Boris will take this seriously and pay attention.

Ken is/was his own worst enemy and in noting his foolishness and determination, I thank him for his many good works, enthusiasm and love of our capital city.

- Jethro Lee-Mahoney, London

Ken Livingstone was the best Mayor London has had for many a generation. Now the Eton buffoon will be handing out jobs to his chums.

- Grant Whiting, Hythe, England

The end of a man who the Labour party did not want but as usual did a u-turn and now hail him as one of their own.

- B Spurgeon, Ipswich England

Ken's out we assume as I write - good!
However, Boris (assuming you're the new Mayor) - it's no good just being a well spoken clown. You've got one gigantic mess of a Labour legacy to straighten out and that takes courage and backbone. Don't try to please all the people all the time. Earn our respect through your hard work and example.

- Jerzy Gawor, London

Is Boris gets it, in will be fantastic for London. We can all look forward to living in a vastly happier city.
We would also, of course, get to say goodbye to the thoroughly unpleasant Livingstone, but let's not think about him too much, eh!
C'mon Boris! C'mon London!

- St, London

Congratulations? At least Ken will know that Boris likes a joke.

Unfortunately, Ken's legacy is no joke: the rip-off Kengestion charge, with traffic speeds back down to 2002 speeds by messing with traffic light and bus lanes.

Rush hour levels remained roughly the same, despite a long term trend towards London traffic levels showing slight reduction.

The claimed benefits on 'accident reduction' were admitted by TFL only to be estimates.

And Ken giving feral youngsters a free ride has ruined many buses for fare-payers.

The Olympics will benefit a few but the costs will forever hang around the necks of all Londoners like a millstone.

An anagram to remember it all by... EVIL STINK 'N' GONE?
