Comment: Culture games

Evening Standard
4 Sep 2008

Today's launch of London's Cultural Olympiad is welcome but deficient. The four-year cultural programme should be an integral part of 2012, especially if the London Games are to be more approachable and democratic than Beijing's.

Yet despite hints at an ambitious programme of events, it still appears to lack a clear vision of what it is for and appears skewed by a heavy-handed emphasis on diversity. Money also remains a likely sticking point with the arts world: some of today's headline figure of £40 million has already been committed.

The Cultural Olympiad is an important project but it needs a clearer vision than this.
