Theatreland 'needs a slice of Olympic cash'

Town hall bosses today called on the Government for a cash injection in the West End before the Olympics. Westminster council warned that while the East End is undergoing massive regeneration, not enough is being done to support areas which will be the main focus for shopping and tourism during the Games.
Along with its business partners, the council is calling on the Government to set aside 1p from every £ of local business rates to raise £24 million. Money raised would be spent on regeneration projects for the area's theatres, Leicester Square and Oxford Street.
Deputy leader of Westminster council, Robert Davis, said: "The West End will act as a showcase for the country come 2012 and we are determined that visitors are wowed by what they see."
