Beijing stars set for heroes' welcome

THOUSANDS are expected on London's streets on Thursday to cheer more than 350 of Britain's Olympic and Paralympic heroes.

They will travel on 12 floats from Mansion House to Trafalgar Square, where they will be met by Mayor Boris Johnson. The group will be led by the triumphant cycling teams, including triple Beijing gold medal winner Chris Hoy. He will be accompanied by Olympic champions Bradley Wiggins, Nicole Cooke, Victoria Pendleton and Rebecca Romero, and Paralympic winners Sarah and Barney Storey, Rachel Morris and Simon Richardson.

Following on float two will be the rowers, who will have 22 Olympic medals on show. Floats three to five will contain the athletics squads, including 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu. Wheelchair tennis winners Peter Norfolk and Jamie Burdekin will be on the third float. Britain's first taekwondo medal winner, Sarah Stevenson, will accompany modern pentathlon silver medallist Heather Fell on float six. They will be joined by the equestrian teams. Float seven will carry the sailors, including Ben Ainslie.

Gold medal boxer James DeGale will be on float eight while the hockey teams will be on float nine and canoeist Tim Brabants will be waving from float 10.

Fourteen-year-old diver Tom Daley will be joined on float 11 by 11-time Paralympic champion Dave Roberts. Britain's double-gold swimmers, Rebecca Adlington and Eleanor Simmons, will be on the final float. The parade is due to start at 11am and reach Trafalgar Square between 12.30pm and 1.15pm.

Colin Moynihan, chairman of the British Olympics Association, said: "This is a great opportunity to welcome back the most successful British Olympic team ever."

Mr Johnson said: "It's a great honour and a real thrill to stand in the shadow of Nelson and congratulate our current crop of national heroes."
