Atwal takes second title

9 Mar 2008

India's Arjun Atwal claimed his second Maybank Malaysian Open title, defeating Sweden's defending champion Peter Hedblom in a sudden-death play-off at the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club.

Both players parred the first play-off hole, the par-five 18th - but the tournament was decided on the second extra hole when Hedblom three-putted for a bogey at the par-three 17th, before Atwal sank a four-foot par putt to secure the victory.

After a weather-interrupted final round, Atwal and Hedblom finished tied on 18 under - one stroke ahead of Britain's Simon Dyson and Australia's Kane Webber.

Francesco Molinari was alone in fifth on 16 under - with David Lynn, Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, Jyoti Randhawa of India and Daniel Vancsik of Argentina a further stroke behind.

Atwal, playing in his first Malaysian Open since winning the title in 2003, began the final round seven strokes off the lead but raced into contention with eight birdies through his first 15 holes before play was suspended for two hours and 20 minutes in mid-afternoon because a thunderstorm.

He parred the 16th and 17th before holing a 12-foot birdie putt at the last to take the clubhouse lead on 18 under.

Hedblom, the overnight leader on 17 under, was still on that mark after managing only a birdie and a par through the first 15 holes - but a 10-foot birdie at the 16th put him back into a tie for the lead with Atwal.

The Swede, who shot 65 yesterday, had a chance to win the tournament in regulation but saw his birdie putt at the 18th stop right on the lip of the cup as he finished with a one-under 71.

Dyson led the tournament for much of the day after birdies at five of his first 12 holes but three-putted for bogey at the 16th to drop back to 17 under.
