89 not out: Michael Owen is getting closer to 100 international caps

Owen's 100 target

Evening Standard   27 Mar 2008

Michael Owen edged closer to joining David Beckham in the 100 club last night and urged Fabio Capello to take another look at him in attack.

The Newcastle striker won his 89th cap when he went on as a second-half substitute against France but failed to add to his tally of 40 international goals.

"Everyone wants to start," Owen said. "In the present circumstances everyone wants the chance to impress the new manager. At least there's still time for him to experiment with the team."

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney ploughed a lone furrow up front in the first half while Owen was paired with Liverpool's Peter Crouch after the break.

Owen added: "It's always nice to play, so when you are on the bench you have to be prepared and it happened earlier than I expected.

"I got a half under my belt, but you always want to do more. You want to score and to get the right result."
