Florent Malouda
In at the deep end: Florent Malouda hasn't played for Chelsea since they lost to Barnsley in the FA Cup

Grant gambles on Malouda and Drogba starts up front

Avram Grant is set to plunge Florent Malouda back into action for the first time in a month tonight against Fenerbahce in the Champions League.

The French winger has been out in the cold since his poor performance in the 1-0 defeat at Barnsley in the FA Cup last month.

He did play the whole game for France as they beat England last week in Paris and that performance has convinced Grant to give him a chance.

Nicolas Anelka also looks like starting the match on the bench against his former club as Didier Drogba - the match winner against Arsenal on Easter Sunday - continues in attack.

Michael Essien is also set to be switched to right-back, where he started against the Gunners, with Frank Lampard and Michael Ballack playing in a midfield anchored by Claude Makelele.

Grant insisted his Chelsea team will be able to roll their sleeves up and 'win ugly' in order to take a quarter-final first-leg lead back to Stamford Bridge.

"We try to combine entertainment and results but we can't do it all the time," Grant said. "We try to do both but after these two games it is more important to qualify for the semi-finals."

The Chelsea boss accepted, though, that he cannot afford to take the Turks lightly in a hostile atmosphere.

He said: "Fenerbahce performed very well in the group stage and also against Sevilla in the last round. I respect their game very much but we believe in our strength to win."

Just how hostile it will be was highlighted by Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos.

The World Cup winner, who is battling to be fit for tonight's game, believes the seething atmosphere of their Sukru Saracoglu Stadium will inspire Fenerbahce to the two-goal lead he believes they must take into the second leg at Stamford Bridge next week.

"Chelsea are one of the favourite teams in the competition but we will win the game anyway. We can qualify if we win 2-0," said Carlos, who is hoping to at least be on the subs' bench tonight after injury.

"We have good players and we are very powerful in front of our fans. We know that they have experienced players but we will overwhelm them."

Goalkeeper Petr Cech is still out with an ankle complaint and did not travel to Turkey - Carlo Cudicini is set to deputise again for the visitors, who will have a back four of Ashley Cole, Ricardo Carvalho, John Terry and Essien.
