Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has urged Avram Grant to improve the team's style of play and admitted that the quality of the football being played at Stamford Bridge was "not quite where we want to be".

Kenyon insisted that Grant had done a great job since taking over from Jose Mourinho in September. The Israeli has led Chelsea to the Champions League semi-finals and to within three points of Manchester United in the title race with five games to go.

Yet despite this, a minority of fans have not taken to him, with some chanting Mourinho's name just a few weeks ago during the 2-1 victory over Arsenal.

Kenyon hopes that negative attitude changes and that the supporters appreciate the job Grant has done, even though he would like to see more attacking football.

He said: "We are in the semi-final of the Champions League and we are right up there in the most competitive run-in of the Premier League that we have had for many years.

"The crowd needs to get behind the team and that's as much Avram as anyone else. It has only been a fairly small element [who have been anti-Grant] and I'm sure we will see the crowd at Stamford Bridge behind the team.

"I don't think the football is where we want to be, but everybody still wants to improve."

Chelsea have now reached four Champions League semi-finals in the last five years and while they have yet to win the trophy, Kenyon believes the club deserve some credit. He added: "It is a big achievement to have got to this point and you have to respect Chelsea as a club for doing so. The players have more than played their part as well as the coaching staff, including Avram Grant.

"But arguably the biggest weeks and biggest achievements are ahead of us still."

Meanwhile, Michael Ballack today warned his team-mates they must win the Champions League if they want to be remembered as greats.

The German said: "It will be fantastic for me and the club if we can win this title. It's why I'm here. I have been playing in it for 10 years and I want to win this competition."
