Dallaglio's desperate to leave Wasps a champion

Lawrence Dallaglio wants to leave London Wasps in the same position he found them - as English champions.

The 35-year-old will bow out of the game at the end of this season and although Wasps are nine points behind Guinness Premiership leaders Gloucester and six points off a top-four slot, he is relishing the challenge of clinching more silverware.

The skipper said: "I joined in 1990 when we won the league. I am driven to leave the club in the same position, but it's going to be a tough ask because of the ground we've had to make up since the disruptions caused to the club by the World Cup.

"There is little sentiment in sport and I am sure there a lot of people out there who will not want me to finish on that kind of high."

Wasps face three games in eight days, starting with Worcester at home on Sunday, then Sale on Tuesday and Saracens away on 20 April. Then in the final regular week of the season they tackle Gloucester at home on 3 May, Newcastle away four days later and Leeds away on the final Saturday.

Dallaglio said: "Our past record in the Heineken Cup means we would be seeded in the top six in next year's competition but we have to qualify first and that means through our league position.

"This club know how to play in the big games at the end of the season and we have a full-strength squad and lots of experience."

Meanwhile, Martin Johnson, England's new team manager-elect, is reportedly making a last-ditch attempt to convince Wasps head coach Shaun Edwards to join his new regime.

Edwards helped Wales win the Grand Slam as defence coach and is on the verge of signing a deal with them until the 2011 World Cup.

Johnson's own position has yet to be confirmed with England, but this is due to happen next week.
