Opportunity knocks: Lukasz Fabianski impressed during Arsenal's Carling Cup run

Arsene Wenger to try his Luk

Arsene Wenger has challenged rookie goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski to prove he has no need to sign a replacement for Jens Lehmann.

The Arsenal manager has hinted he will give the Polish youngster his first taste of Premier League action in tonight's visit to rock-bottom Derby County.

Fabianski, 23, has yet to feature in a League match for the Gunners since signing in a £2million deal from Legia Warsaw last summer but he impressed during the club's run to the Carling Cup semi-finals and has also been capped four times by Poland.

He is expected to be named in his national squad for Euro 2008 and, although first-choice Manuel Almunia has recovered from his wrist injury, Wenger now wants to test him in the top flight.

If he impresses, the Frenchman has suggested he will opt against signing another goalkeeper to replace Lehmann, who will return to his native Germany when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Wenger had been linked with moves for Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland and PSV Eindhoven's Heurelho Gomes, who is expected to leave the Dutch club in the summer. But the Gunners boss insisted: "There are some players I want to see in the last games of the season and I will have a look at Fabianski, possibly on Monday.

"He's class, he understands football, he reads the game well and is quick, technically good. He also has a good connection with the team, with the game and he has good co-ordination for a goalkeeper.

"At the moment, I do not need to sign another goalkeeper in the summer. But that means as well seeing how well he does if I decide to play him. But, on that front, I'm not especially worried."

One player who will not be receiving a rest at the Emirates between now and 11 May is Gael Clichy. Wenger admits he cannot do without the French left-back, who has banished the memories of the departed Ashley Cole with his displays this season.

Wenger insists there has not been a more impressive full-back in the top flight and believes Clichy, 23, will get even better next term.

He added: "There's still more in there. When you see him come out with the game he produced at Old Trafford, you think: 'There's more in the locker.'

"I am very positive with Gael because he loves the game and, every day after training, he's out there practising to improve. I think you can say he's replaced Ashley Cole very well."

Little rests on the game at Pride Park, with Derby long since relegated, but Wenger has challenged his young side to finish the season with a flourish. He said: "We want to finish with pride and dignity and be faithful to the kind of football that we have produced until now.

"We want to finish with four wins. We achieved one against Reading last week and if we win all the rest of our games, we can finish with more wins than the year we were unbeaten."

Alexander Hleb, who is suspended, maintains he does not know if he will join Inter Milan this summer. Inter have revealed they want to sign the Arsenal midfielder, angering Wenger who says he will report them to FIFA for making an illegal approach.

Hleb, 26, will have two years of his deal to run this summer but is able to buy out the rest of the contract under FIFA rules.

"Who knows what will happen?" said the Belarus international. "All I can say is that I enjoy the game here and enjoy playing for Arsenal."
