Must do better: Steven Gerrard

Alan Hansen backing Gerrard and Torres to get it right

Alan Hansen has warned Chelsea that Liverpool's Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard will come good in their Champions League semi-final tonight.

John Arne Riise's injury-time own goal at Anfield last week means that, to have any chance of going through in the second leg, Rafael Benitez's men must score - something they have not achieved in their last eight visits to Stamford Bridge.

However, Hansen feels 30-goal Torres and skipper Gerrard will both make up for their disappointing displays in the first leg, which ended 1-1, and are capable of leading his old club to the final in Moscow.

He also senses a lucky omen from his playing days, when he was part of the Liverpool team who overcame their poor record at the Bridge to win 1-0 and clinch the League title on the last day of the 1986 season.

"Liverpool's big two in Torres and Gerrard did not play particularly well in the first game but it will be a different story at Stamford Bridge," said the former Anfield skipper. "I expect them both to be on their game.

"Liverpool have a great record in this competition and it is not a foregone conclusion that Chelsea will win.

"Chelsea have the away goal and Liverpool have a horrible record there, but so did we when we went there in 1986 and beat them to win the League title. Okay, Chelsea are a better side now than they were back then, but Liverpool can still do it.

"Chelsea are favourites but Liverpool have the pedigree in the tournament and it is wide open."

Liverpool have knocked Chelsea out of the competition at this stage in two of the last three seasons and Hansen believes Benitez will send out his team to stifle Chelsea in the hope they can then nick a goal on the break.

"Benitez will play the second-leg the same as he did the first," Hansen added. "He will be ultra-cautious at the start. That is the way both teams play."

Looking ahead to next season, Hansen accepts that while Europe is currently the Reds' most comfortable domain, they need to do more to compete in the League.

He added: "Liverpool supporters are happy with the Champions League but the one they want to win most is the league title.

"Benitez has to keep on buying because the difference between Liverpool and Chelsea is the size of their squad. They need players who can play in five or six positions exceptionally well - they only have Gerrard who can play like that."
