Good grace: Keegan embraces Avram Grant at the final whistle

Chelsea are worthy of the title but United will triumph, says Keegan

Kevin Keegan insisted today that Manchester United will win the League at the weekend, even though Chelsea deserve the title.

The Newcastle manager saw his side outplayed by Avram Grant's team in the second half of their match yesterday and eventually lose 2-0, which brought their seven-game unbeaten run to an end.

Chelsea have failed to impress the neutrals and pundits alike for their performances this season and even some supporters have complained at the quality of football on display.

Yet Keegan feels they are just as good as Manchester United and have simply timed their title charge too late.

He said: "Chelsea would be worthy champions, but I don't think they will be. In any other season, you usually have one exceptional side, this year I think you've got two.

"You've got to give Chelsea some credit. I think they are a better team than everyone's given them credit for.

"They have a very, very strong squad, with people all around the place who could better every other club bar one in the top four. Shaun Wright-Phillips wasn't even changed to play against us, nor was Ashley Cole and Joe Cole was warming up, but didn't get on. Then they bring Frank Lampard on - you don't need me to tell you, it's a pretty strong squad.

"That's why they are where they are and challenging for the Champions League and that's why they can play 60-odd games while we seem to have 40-odd games a season.

"I think United will be champions because one player, Cristiano Ronaldo, has had such an outstanding season and that, along with the other great players, just gives them the edge. I can't see them going to Wigan, despite the pitch, and not winning."

Keegan also admitted he has been disappointed by his own club's failure to agree terms with striker Michael Owen over a new contract yet.

The England international, who has scored six goals in his last nine games, will see his current deal end next year and Keegan had hoped to have secured his signature by now.

He added: "I want Michael Owen to stay. Six weeks ago I asked the club to tie him up, but it's not done yet. It is disappointing, but not the end of the world. I never said to him 'Michael, stay here and we'll get Champions League football and win the League' so I'm not misleading anyone there."

However, chairman Chris Mort has promised Keegan will be given the chance to build a squad which can compete to sign the biggest names.

Mort said: "Over the summer, we will look to strengthen the squad further. In addition to making any immediate fixes that may be required, we will want to acquire players that can help make Newcastle United a top team for the medium and long-term, not just for the next season or two."
