Euro boost: Wembley could host 2011 Champions League Final

Tax boost for Wembley's Euro hopes

13.05.08

Wembley is set to host the 2011 Champions League Final after the Government agreed to relax tax charges on overseas footballers' earnings.

UEFA awarded the 2010 final to Madrid in March but delayed a decison on the 2011 showpiece.

It is believed the taxation system for overseas teams was a major stumbling block for Wembley to win UEFA's backing.

But Culture Secretary Andy Burnham today confirmed the Treasury is now onside, raising hopes of the £900million stadium staging the final in the same year FIFA will decide on England's World Cup bid.

Burnham said: "Visiting teams will not face a tax charge."

Wembley last hosted the European Cup Final in 1992.
