100m kings will meet at Palace

Evening Standard   2 Jun 2008

Crystal Palace is set to stage a showdown between the new fastest man on the planet, the previous 100metre record holder and the world champion next month.

Usain Bolt, who entered the record books by clocking 9.72 seconds at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York, is expected this week to announce his appearance in the London Grand Prix on 25 July.

That would set up a potential dress rehearsal for the Olympic final as confirmed entrants for London already include fellow Jamaican Asafa Powell, who ran the previous best at 9.74 secs, and world champion Tyson Gay.

Bolt will have the psychological advantage over Gay as he finished 0.13sec ahead of the American at the rain-lashed Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island on Saturday.

"I had the idea I could run the world record," said Bolt. "I was pretty confident coming in here. I wasn't looking for a world record but it came to me and I'll take it."

Bolt admitted he was aided by a false start by another runner.

"I was glad for that," he said. "My first start wasn't that good. I knew if I got Tyson on the start I'd get him."
