Ireland centre Luke Fitzgerald failed a fitness test on an ankle injury and is out of Saturday's clash with New Zealand in Wellington.
Team boss Joey Miles said: "We're reasonably optimistic Luke will be available for the Test in Australia."
Fitzgerald is replaced by Paddy Wallace and Miles added: "We knew there was a possibility of this happening so Paddy has trained most of the week in that position."
