Ivanovic closing on Paris glory

Ana Ivanovic, the new world No1, can continue the process of deflecting attention and camera lenses from Maria Sharapova by defeating Dinara Safina in tomorrow's French Open women's final.

The glamorous Ivanovic slugged her way to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over fellow Serb Jelena Jankovic to reach her third Grand Slam final and second in succession on the Roland Garros clay.

Safina, sister of former men's world No1 Marat Safin, easily beat her Russian compatriot Sveltana Kuznetsova 6-3, 6-2 to make her first major final.

Ivanovic is rightly proud of having already earned the No1 ranking, usurping Sharapova who only gained the honour prior to the tournament when Jusine Henin announced her retirement.

She holds a 2-1 advantage over Safina, is the first Serbian to top the rankings and said: "You play to win and I have to work hard because Dinara is in great form, great shape, and she's a big fighter. "

Safina's huge ground strokes and ability to let fly with an emotional outbursts emulate her brother's more famous attibutes.

But she has, to date, stayed away from the racket breaking that is also a regular feature of Marat's career; one that has brought him the Australian and US Open titles.

For Safina, it is now all about controlling her emotions and she is promising to "die" on court in a bid to provide the family with another winner.

"I will give everything I have," she said. "If I have to die, I will have to die on the court, because there nothing to save energy for, so I have to give all."

Britain's Jade Curtis partners Nikola Hofmanova in the girls' doubles semi-final today against seventh seeds Lesley Kerkhove and Arantxa Rus.
