Benbaun
On the up: the seven-year old Benbaun improved significantly last season

Benbaun can stand tall for Brits

Benbaun can put an end to the recent Antipodean dominance of the King's Stand Stakes tomorrow (3.05) by getting the better of old adversary Takeover Target.

Mark Wallace's consistent seven-year-old finished inches behind the Aussie raider in 2006, but improved significantly last season culminating in a win in the Prix de l'Abbaye.

Benbaun made a pleasing reappearance on soft ground at Chantilly last month, a run that will have him spot on for this race which has been upgraded to Group 1 status this year.

Takeover Target, trained by Joe Janiak in Sydney, is now reckoned by connections to be better over six furlongs than five but still looks the strongest of the Australian challengers, having got the better of fellow Aussie Magnus last time they met.

The one southern hemisphere raider who could be massively overpriced as well as underestimated is National Colour from South Africa.

This flying grey mare was virtually untouchable at home and proved to be pretty hot in Dubai last year, but will be reappearing for the first time in 444 days after chipping a bone in her knee. She will appreciate the quick conditions and jockey Kevin Shea was very happy last week after a pleasing workout over five furlongs of Newmarket's July Course.

Shea reports that National Colour once clocked 55 seconds over that distance in South Africa and is noted for flying out of the blocks. Being drawn out towards the middle is far from ideal but, despite a long absence, 20-1 could be cracking each-way value.

Jeremy Noseda's Fleeting Spirit looked a star sprinter in the making when recording a good time at Haydock against smart opposition, but does not look good value at odds of around 9-4.

The field tomorrow is considerably stronger and although Fleeting Spirit is expected to run a big race, life will be much tougher here.

Benbaun has proved he handles the course, the conditions, and can become the first English-trained winner of this prestigious contest since 2004 and restore some pride for the British sprinters.
