New date is planned for Match Play
Evening Standard 23 Jun 2008The World Match Play golf championship may not take place at Wentworth this October after an unbroken run of 44 years.
HSBC, the sixth company to sponsor the event, ended their five-year involvement last year when Ernie Els stretched his record number of titles to seven.
An announcement was expected today but it is understood that the event might wait until 2009 for a re-launch.
Arnold Palmer was the inaugural winner in 1964, Gary Player and Seve Ballesteros each captured it five times and others with their name on the trophy include Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Ian Woosnam, Sandy Lyle, Nick Faldo, Lee Westwood and Paul Casey.
Martin Kaymer, meanwhile, is on course to become only the second German after Bernhard Langer to play in the Ryder Cup.
The 23-year-old is up to sixth on the European points table after beating Denmark's Anders Hansen at the first hole of a sudden-death play-off at the BMW International in Munich.
Kaymer also won in Abu Dhabi in January.
