REVEALED: Secret of Andy's form...an elastic lead and a dog called Maggie

Chris Jones, Evening Standard
27 Jun 2008

Andy Murray is being pulled along towards Wimbledon glory by a piece of elastic and a puppy dog.

The British No1 has reached the third round without dropping a set, breaking sweat or losing his infamous temper.

Murray's new-found strength has been put down to the combined effect of punishing workouts with fitness trainer Jez Green followed by the soothing effect of his new border collie.

As this picture shows, the Scot, is employing the latest exercise techniques. The 21-year-old has been doing resistance training with Green and chin-ups in the gym with a weight tied around his waist. His mother Judy believes her son's inner calm has come from his eight-week-old border collie Maggie - named in homage to a Rod Stewart song.

Ahead of Murray's clash with Germany's Tommy Haas tomorrow, Judy said: "Andy's really chilled at the moment and it's showing in the way he is on the court so far. He wants to play with the puppy all the time.

"The night before he played Xavier Malisse, Andy was hiding under the duvet saying 'where am I? Come and get me!' And the puppy was trying to find him under the duvet."
