Running into trouble: Dwain Chambers is opposed by the British Olympic Association and many respected athletes in his efforts to lift his lifetime ban

Stars put the heat on Chambers

Almost 100 British sports stars past and present have signed a petition calling for Dwain Chambers to be barred from the Olympic Games.

Lawyers for the disgraced sprinter will this week serve a writ in the High Court against the British Olympic Association challenging his lifetime ban from the Games.

It follows the 30-year-old achieving the Olympic qualifying time for the 100 metres by running 10.06 sec at a meeting in Biberach, Germany at the weekend.

However, a host of British Olympic greats - including Dame Kelly Holmes, Sir Steve Redgrave and Chris Hoy - have joined forces with the BOA to back a petition against Chambers.

The petition, initiated by the British Athletes' Commission, says: "We believe allowing drug cheats the privilege of competing at the Games for Team GB is wrong."

Chambers' lawyer Nick Collins expects the case to be heard in the week leading up to the Olympic trials in Birmingham in mid July.

The sprinter, who was unsuccessful in his attempt at rugby league, served a two-year ban after a positive test for the designer steroid THG in 2003.
