Advice: Venus Williams, a winner in the singles and doubles at Wimbledon this year, thinks Britain's new hope must just concentrate on her tennis

Venus tells new star Robson how to keep her feet on ground

Venus Williams has urged Britain's new Wimbledon girls' champion Laura Robson to ignore off-court distractions as the 14-year-old attempts to make the transition from promising junior to a serious contender on the main tour.

Williams, who defeated sister Serena 7-5, 6-4 to clinch a fifth Wimbledon women's singles title, took time to reflect on Robson's achievement in the wake of her own glorious victory on Centre Court.

Robson was presented with her trophy in the Royal Box late on Saturday evening after Venus also became the women's doubles champion with Serena. But after hitting the headlines at SW19, Robson now heads off to Holland with coach Martijn Bok for low-key tournaments and training.

The next time British fans will see her in action looks certain to be at the ITF tournament in Shrewsbury, starting on 21 September. It will be her debut on the senior circuit and Williams hopes the teenager can cope.

The 28-year-old American said: "It was tough because I didn't play the juniors like Laura and when I started on the tour, opponents would say 'she isn't what they said she is' after beating me. But, you have to believe in yourself. I was told so many times I couldn't do it and I did.

"There was pressure because of my reputation but if you have the talent and the mind to deal with everything then it will all come together. I was oblivious to the publicity I got at a young age because I was used to that kind of attention. All Laura needs to do is enjoy playing and keep her eye on the ball and believe in herself."

Robson became the youngest winner of the girls' singles since Martina Hingis in 1994 - the year Robson was born - after defeating Noppawan Lertcheewakarn of Thailand 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Robson was at the Champions Dinner last night and is coming to terms with being in the spotlight.

Robson trained with Hingis two years ago and said: "I definitely learned a lot from that in terms of how hard she had to practise every day. She sent me a text during this week when I was playing the quarter-finals. She just said 'good luck, I'm really proud of you, hopefully see you soon'."

Her agents Octagon will today start sifting through the many offers that are expected to arrive from companies desperate to get involved with the next "big thing" in British tennis.

She is already part of the adidas "family" and also has a racket sponsor but the real money will come from personal endorsements. Andy Murray, the British No1, signed a £1million deal with Highland Spring and landed a similar deal - including lucrative bonuses - from Fred Perry, his clothing supplier, plus Head rackets.

Robson has that debut on the senior tour firmly in her sights.

"I am definitely looking forward to it," she said "It should be a great learning experience. I probably won't win that many matches but I'm going to try to win as many as possible.

"I'll still keep playing juniors and then add in a couple more senior tournaments. My ultimate ambition is to win the Wimbledon senior title."
