Andy Murray has climbed back into the world top 10 in the rankings published today.

The British No1 has moved up from 11th to ninth after reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, his best performance in a Grand Slam.

Murray had no ranking points to defend from this time last year, when he missed almost three months of the season due to a wrist injury.

Frenchman Richard Gasquet, who threw away a two-set lead against the Scot in their fourth round tie last week, was the biggest loser among the top 20 today as he dropped five places to 15th.

Wimbledon qualifier Chris Eaton, the lowest-ranked player in the men's singles this year, is now the British men's No7 after soaring to 405 in the world following his first-round victory over Boris Pashanski.

Anne Keothavong, British No1 in the women's rankings, also got through to the second round - where she lost to eventual champion Venus Williams - and is now at a career-high 82 in the world.

Elena Baltacha, who also reached the second round, has jumped 11 spots to 133 in the world and is has been elevated to British No2.

Rafael Nadal's epic victory over Roger Federer has seen him close the gap on the world No1 to 545 points. And he could end Federer's stay at the top of the rankings - a position he has held since February 2004 - before the end of this year.

Nadal only reached the fourth round of last year's US Open and a significant improvement this time round will earn him a big rankings boost. His Swiss rival, meanwhile, must win the event to defend the points he earned at Flushing Meadows last year.

Ana Ivanovic is still world No1 but Jelena Jankovic and Maria Sharapova have swapped places in the women's rankings, with the Serb replacing the Russian at No2.
