Sprint finish: third stage of Tour is built for speedsters

Tour stage made for sprint kings

07.07.08

Sprinters will be on their favourite terrain in today's third stage of the Tour de France, a 208km run from St Malo to Nantes.

Following two opening stages designed for attacking flair, the course switches to the flat, leaving little room for successful breakaways.

"The finale is cut out for the pure sprinters, like Robbie McEwen or Oscar Freire," said race director Jean-Francois Pescheux.

Those who usually try their luck in front of the peloton might save some energy for tomorrow's time trial on a 29.5km circuit at Cholet.

Norway's Thor Hushovd, who won in St Brieuc yesterday, could make it consecutive wins with a Credit Agricole team but Spaniard Alejandro Valverde retains the leader's yellow jersey after winning the opening stage.
