Dwain Chambers
On trial: Chambers faces a court appeal before Beijing

Tyrone ready to Dwain supreme in Birmingham

Tyrone Edgar is determined to see off controversial rival Dwain Chambers at this weekend's UK National Championships and Olympic trials in Birmingham.

The pair meet in an eagerly awaited 100m showdown where the two top finishers normally gain automatic Olympic places. This year, however, if Chambers finishes either first or second, it will be a High Court judge who makes the decision on his eligibility to run in Beijing when he appeals against his Olympic ban next Wednesday.

Edgar, who learned his sprinting on the tough US college circuit, is not bothered by Chambers' claims that his experience will unsettle his rivals in tonight's heats and tomorrow's semi-finals and final.

Edgar, 26, whose best of 10.06secs is just 0.01secs slower than Chambers, said: "It would be absolutely fantastic if I got to the Olympics, it would be a dream come true, it's what everyone trains for. My aim is to really make it this year.

"I'm not worried about Dwain. There are a lot of very fast guys here, but I think that that is really positive for the sport. It can only make you better." Defending champion Marlon Devonish, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, Simeon Williamson and Craig Pickering are also in the running for selection.

Edgar, who injured his back when running into a shot putter on the warm-up track in Lille a fortnight ago, insisted: " Fitnesswise, I am right where I want to be, I'm at the top of my game." The three days of action will also feature Beijing medal hopes Phillips Idowu, Kelly Sotherton, Catherine Ohuruogu, Nicola Sanders, Jade Johnson, Jo Pavey and Goldie Sayers.
