Staying put? West Ham's Anton Ferdinand

Fulham sign up Zamora and Pantsil

Evening Standard   16 Jul 2008

West Ham have completed the sale of Bobby Zamora and John Pantsil to Fulham but Anton Ferdinand has rejected a move to Newcastle.

Having spent vastly on transfers and wages last summer, the Hammers want to recoup cash this time round and will receive £6.3million for striker Zamora and defender Pantsil.

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson is delighted with his captures and said: "We've chased them for a long time. When I knew that both players were available we immediately started negotiations with West Ham, but it's taken a long while to get the deal over the finishing line.

"That's the way it is these days, it is not easy to make deals complete. You can start them off but completing them is always difficult. But I'm really pleased we've got two players who I think are the right types that we're looking for and who will improve our team."

West Ham have put a £6million price tag on Ferdinand but Newcastle's hopes of a deal are over after the centre-half ended talks, it is believed, because he is not keen on moving to the North East.

Ferdinand's decision is a blow to Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan, who is short of cover in defence.

The Hammers are still willing to sell the former England Under-21 international, who has also been linked with Aston Villa.
