Yanks must be ruthless, says Watson

16.07.08

Tom Watson believes the Americans need to drastically improve if they are going to compete against the Europeans in the Ryder Cup in September.

Watson, who won eight majors, says the US team has been on a decline since Europe tasted victory in 1985 at the Belfry.

And the 58-year-old wants the Americans to rediscover their ruthless streak in the competition at Valhalla this year.

He said: "Something has got to change for the Americans to be in better shape when the Ryder Cup comes around.

"When I first played in the Ryder Cup it was a forgone conclusion the Yanks were going to win.

"When they added the Europeans it was a real contest and we have been falling behind ever since. Our team needs some inspiration."
