Comment: Chambers ruling is a victory for athletics

Steve McKenlay, Sports Editor

The decision to reject Dwain Chambers's attempt to block the BOA's by-law that prevents athletes guilty of serious doping offences from being selected for future Games is a significant victory for the future of British athletics.

To have allowed a self-confessed drug cheat to take his place in Team GB for Beijing would have been an insult to the Games themselves and those athletes, past, present and future, who strive to attain the ultimate performance of human endeavour without the need to step into the murky waters of chemical assistance.

Today's decision is a start; now let's see the IOC and the IAAF introduce a compulsory life ban for all athletes who choose drugs over genuine sporting excellence.
