Mike Catt lands coaching role at London Irish

Mike Catt, the former England World Cup-winning centre, has taken the first step towards becoming an international rugby coach.

Catt has assumed control of the London Irish backs following Brian Smith's decision to quit as the club's director of rugby to become England attack coach.

His new role will mean more coaching than playing and he could even eventually follow Smith into the England set-up. Catt said: "There comes a time in every player's career where he has to look to the future.

"For me, moving into full-time coaching is a natural progression and I'm pleased to have the opportunity of doing so."

Also being touted for higher office is Toby Booth, who was in charge of the Irish forwards but now assumes overall control.

Andrew Coppel, the Irish chairman, said: "It was always our preference to promote internally provided we had the right calibre of staff.

"I am delighted that Toby has agreed to become head coach, supported by Mike. These appointments also provide vital continuity as we seek to build on the momentum of the last two years."
