Gareth Barry is still hoping to join Liverpool or Arsenal before the end of the transfer window despite the prospect of a new contract at Aston Villa.
The England midfielder was given a hero's welcome by Villa fans when coming on as a substitute in the club's Intertoto Cup 1-0 win over Odense and afterwards manager Martin O'Neill hinted at a fresh move to keep him in the midlands.
But Barry has set his heart on playing in the Champions League this season and, if Liverpool fail to do a deal with Villa, he is keen for Arsenal to step up their interest.
The Anfield club have fallen well short of Villa's £18 million valuation, while Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger needs to fill the midfield void created by the departures of Alexander Hleb, Mathieu Flamini and Gilberto.
