Fergie raps Blatter over slavery slur

28.07.08

Sir Alex Ferguson has hit back at Sepp Blatter for claiming Manchester United are treating Cristiano Ronaldo like a slave.

FIFA's president caused outrage with his comments over United's refusal to let Ronaldo - who only signed a five-year contract 12 months ago - join Real Madrid.

United boss Ferguson said: "It was an unfortunate statement from someone in such a position. Slavery was abolished many years ago. When you consider the history of slavery, it was a very unfortunate statement."

Carlos Tevez, meanwhile, scored but also missed a penalty as United won their friendly against Portsmouth 2-1 in Pretoria.

Chris Eagles got United's other goal while Jermain Defoe replied for Portsmouth in a dress rehearsal for next month's Community Shield.
