Confident: Andy Murray faces Sam Querrey in the Cincinnati Masters

Big three are way ahead, says Andy Murray

Evening Standard   29 Jul 2008

Andy Murray, confident his right knee will allow him to face American Sam Querrey in today's second round match at the Cincinnati Masters event, accepts he is just one of many players in a group behind the top three of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in the men's game.

The World No9 said: "Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are still the big favourites going into all the top tournaments, but I think I'm in the pack behind them.

"This is my favourite surface. I feel I play consistently well on it, and my results in the bigger tournaments would suggest that."

Nadal and Federer continue their battle for the world number one position in Cincinnati while Murray knows he can pick up useful ranking points if he can go deep into the tournament.

Querrey, 20, recovered from a disappointing second set to beat Paul-Henri Mathieu of France 6-4 4-6 6-3 and set up a second career meeting against Murray.

Federer, like Murray and the other top eight seeds, had a bye and will face American Robby Ginepri in his opening match.

Ginepri beat qualifier Jonas Bjorkman 6-0 7-6 to advance but Federer claims he is not feeling any more pressure than usual, despite Nadal's form.

"There's always pressure, but I expect to win my matches and tournaments. I've had that four or five years. It's nothing new," said the 26-year-old.

"It's only that number one is in more danger than in the past. I focus on the big picture, prepare well and try not to go crazy over the ranking. I know there's a lot of talk about it now, and Rafa does deserve the credit."

Nadal will play a qualifier or Frenchman Florent Serra. World number three Djokovic is in the same half of the draw as Nadal, while Murray and Federer are in the opposite side
