Staying in Scotland: Hayley Haining is not travelling to Beijing

Haining in limbo over marathon

Evening Standard   1 Aug 2008

Marathon reserve Hayley Haining will not be travelling to Great Britain's Olympic training camp in Macau.

The 36-year-old made the decision after Paula Radcliffe announced she would be joining up with the GB squad.

Haining has admitted she is uncertain about whether to go to Beijing or not.

The Scot is in limbo as UK Athletics have given Radcliffe until the day before the Olympic marathon, on 17 August, to decide whether or not to compete.

A spokesman for UK Athletics said: "Hayley always said that she wouldn't go to the camp if Paula did. She will continue to train in Scotland and wait and see whether she is needed in Beijing." He added: "This doesn'tmean that Hayley won't go to the Olympics."

Radcliffe, 34, was diagnosed with a stress fracture to her left femur in May, which seemed to make her participation in Beijing unlikely.

However, she has been training at high intensity in the last fortnight and her decision to travel to Macau has increased expectations of her participating at the Olympics.
